The clan face a dilemma - Billy doesn’t want to go on his Walkabout yet and besides, he hasn’t even been initiated into a man. Can hardly blame him, they want to use the slice of a knife where no boy wants a knife to go. The spirit of his mother forces the issue with a violent attack by a giant Red kangaroo. She’s good like that - helpful. The old Magic Man wants to seal Billy’s horrific injuries under the coals of a fire, exactly as he would initiate an Aboriginal Warrior. He’s helpful too. Billy must decide whether to endure the pain of initiation or remain a boy.

“Though Tribal Scarring was more serious, it was really great. One of the best YA books I have read! Kudos! I recommend everyone to read it.” JB Cacdac

“Great coming of age story. Isn’t Pindaari a loveable character.” Anne, Australia

“I can’t wait to see what Billy’s next adventure is!” Jessica B, USA

URBAN HUNTERS is laugh–out–loud, gut–churning, heart–wrenching storytelling at its best. Unlike anything you’ve ever read, in typical Taaffe fashion. Hilarious as usual. Always surprising. Wonderful!

I wanted to portray a boy becoming a man somewhere in this series, along with the pride it brings. With Billy chosen to go Walkabout through the whitefella culture at only 13, and to find some girls, I figured it would be great if he went as a man. He was around circumcision age according to Aboriginal customs anyway so that wasn't a problem but I wanted more, I wanted him to walk tall and proud amongst the whitefellas. So I threw in some Tribal Scarring that turns a man into a warrior.

A circumcision is a quick slice, Tribal Scarring is torturous, gruesome and drawn out. Perfect. The problem was it's a ceremony usually only performed on someone much older than Billy and there was no way Cobar would allow such a thing. So I found a way to force the issue. And force it I did. It turned out great! And what's more, it was brought on by the spirit of his very own Mother; who is never to be messed with.
